Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt the time she needed throughout her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art and theater. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay learnt by doing the art of being a good vehicle to engage in political activism. In the same way, her mother was conscious of her social status and influenced that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay resided in Compton throughout her youth, however she would spend every summer with the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of the broadcast media. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash of the home of a juror. As a result of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the public relations industry. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
